Gearing 

Charlie Cunningham and Jacquie Phelan used gearing on their racing mountain bikes in the early eighties that had double chainrings with extra wide ratio freewheels for better shifting and lighter weight, an arrangement that was rediscovered by top racers in the late 1990’s.
